The Lev Kuleshov Experiment

Lev Kuleshov was a Russian film director and screenwriter. He was born in 1899 and died in 1970. He briefly taught Sergei Eisenstein before he advanced onto his own dreams.

Kuleshov said that 3 images of the same thing had meanings when paired with another set of 3 images. e.g. if a man is staring at something in one image, there could be many images that could pair up with this image and no one would no what he is exactly staring at. This is editing. This is known as the 'Kuleshov Experiment'.

Sergei Eisenstein

Sergei Eisenstein was also a Russian Film Maker. He was born in 1898 and died in 1948. He is particularly famous for his silent films and his propaganda views shown thoughout his work. 'October' is one of his most famous films and especially a particular scene in it called 'The Bridge Raising' which shows his propaganda views.

In typical Hollywood editing the shots are "sutured" or stitched together so that you cannot see the join. The narrative is also nearly always character led.

In Eisensteins montage there are a clash of shots and the 180 degree rule is frequently broken to draw attention to the fact that you are watching a film to create an ideoligical effect in the spectators mind. The narrative is led by ideas rather than the characters. He uses typage.
